About Us
DWEJRA DIVERS Inland Sea Gozo
Dwejra Divers is a group of freelance SCUBA instructors and dive leaders from all over Malta and Gozo, working from our dive centre just metres from the Inland Sea — the ideal training site before heading out to open water.
The Inland Sea, sometimes also called Qawra in Maltese also known as Dwejra, is a lagoon of seawater on the island of Gozo linked to the Mediterranean Sea through an opening formed by a narrow natural arch most probably formed by a geological fault in the limestone.
The bottom of the lagoon is mostly pebbles and rocks and is fairly shallow. As you exit through the tunnel towards open sea, the floor drops in a series of shelves up to 35 meters on the outside. Jacques Cousteau (famous oceanographer) said the Inland Sea was among his top ten dives.
On calm days, fishing boats, known in Maltese as Luzzijiet, can pass through the tunnel. Some of the boats are used to take visitors through the archway and then for a tour of the nearby cliffs and other sites, mainly the Fungus Rock and to the site of the previous Azure Window.
